The Menu.
Rating:👌
A couple travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
I went into this only having seen a trailer and vague word of mouth from those who had seen it. The trailer didn't give anything away, but it didn't really peak my initial interest.
In the end I didn't hate the movie, but I really don't see the fuss anyone is giving it. There is not a lot to currently see in the theaters other than the latest MCU movie, and this would be a palette cleanser for those with superhero fatigue.
I'm all for a good thriller, especially ones that are outside the box. The initial concept of the movie is intriguing, but the overall subtext is nothing new. The rich are horrible and deserve to be punish is a trope I've seen time and again. As always Fiennes, Taylor-Joy, and Hoult do a good job acting wise. But I wish that it was more of an ensemble. You get small glimpses into the other cast members and their characters backstory but the main focus is Taylor-Joy and Fiennes. Maybe the story would have given me more interest if those other characters were able to actually do something other than just sit there at a table complaining or being frightened.
I did like the few comedic aspects and I wished they leaned more into that. The trailer initially made it seem like it was a dark comedy, but personally I just don't think there was enough to warrant it in the genre. This movie is style over substance, and is just as bougie as the food featured in it.
It's a movie that I can say I've seen, but I don't need or want to watch again. If I were to recommend it to people I would have them wait for it to come out on streaming. It's not going to be for everyone's taste.
