Glass Onion
Rating:👌
Intrepid detective Benoit Blanc finds himself at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. As in all the best murder mysteries, each person harbors their own secrets, lies and motivations. And when someone turns up dead, everyone is a suspect.
I really enjoyed 'Knives Out', I thought it was one of the top movies that came out that year. And I've been looking forward to the release of the follow up 'Glass Onion'. However I don't think this film lives up to its predecessor.
It was just ok, compared to the first film it was a bit too goofy for me. And not in a good Clue goofy type of way. I was disappointed in the mystery because there really wasn't one. I knew from the get go who the culprit was and in the end the big reveal wasn't that big. Instead we get a plot twist half way through and its the only highlight for me that I didn't see coming.
It has an excellent cast that wasn't used to their fullest potential. Some fell to the background which was just a shame to waste great talents like Hahn and Odem over Dave Batista. Craig while once again did a great job as Detective Blanc, the writing of his character did feel off to me. But I'm guessing that may have been the difference in tone compared to the original. Johnson clearly wrote this during the height of the pandemic which he includes aspects of. But I think he went a little stir crazy with the script and he forgot what made the first movie so great. This did not live up to the hype for me, but I'm hoping for a better mystery in a third installment.
